Xai S. Lor was born a refugee in Thailand. As a young child, he emigrated to the United States with his family. Lor grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota. After completing his first undergraduate degree, he wanted to continue to pursue a professional degree to become a Cultural Anthropologist. Instead, he decided to follow his heart to study Visual Arts, to become an artist to follow his passion.
Lor is a contemporary artist, who works primarily in painting. The type of imagery he creates is Modern Abstract Painting. He started drawing and painting when he was young. The use of color in his painting is influenced by the bright colors in Paj Ntaub (Flower Cloth), a type of artistic expression from his Hmong community.
His painting has been shown at various museums and galleries. He earned his Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of North Dakota, a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and two other colleges. He has taught Drawing at the University of North Dakota.
