Xai S. Lor is a visual artist, educator, and curator based in the Twin Cities. Born a refugee in Thailand, he emigrated to the United States with his family as a young child, growing up in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Initially aspiring to become a Cultural Anthropologist, Lor followed his heart and pursued a career in Visual Arts, becoming a first-generation college graduate. He regarded himself as a lifelong learner.
As a contemporary artist, Lor primarily works in Painting and Drawing, creating Modern Abstract Paintings. His use of color is influenced by the bright hues in Paj Ntaub (Flower Cloth), an artistic expression from his Hmong community. His work often blends traditional elements with contemporary artistic expressions.
Lor was deeply involved in the Hmong Embroidery project, contributing narratives, photographs, and website development. His work has been featured in notable exhibitions, including "Celebrate Hmong" at XIA Gallery in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This exhibition showcases the transformative power of storytelling through various art forms, highlighting Lor’s dedication to preserving and promoting Hmong culture.
His paintings have been exhibited in various museums and galleries. He holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of North Dakota, a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and additional degrees from two other colleges. Self-directed and motivated, Lor has a passion for teaching and has taught Drawing at the University of North Dakota. He is currently an adjunct instructor at Dunwoody College of Technology.
